What Is MAT ?

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is an evidence-based, whole-person approach to treating Opioid Use Disorder (OUD). It combines FDA-approved medications with counseling and behavioral support to reduce cravings, ease withdrawal symptoms, and support lasting recovery.

OUD is a chronic medical condition — not a moral failure. The brain's chemistry changes with prolonged opioid use, and medication helps restore normal function so patients can focus on rebuilding their lives.

A 2021 NIH study (PMC8389722) showed buprenorphine reduces overdose death risk by 50–70%.
If you recognize these signs in yourself or someone you love, reaching out for professional help is the most important step you can take

Suboxone

Buprenorphine / Naloxone  ·  Sublingual

Suboxone is a sublingual film or tablet taken daily at home. It combines buprenorphine — a partial opioid agonist that curbs cravings and withdrawal — with naloxone, which discourages misuse. It is flexible, discreet, and effective for long-term maintenance.

About Suboxone

Sublocade®

Buprenorphine Extended-Release  ·  Monthly Injection

Sublocade is a once-monthly subcutaneous injection administered in our office. It delivers a steady, consistent level of buprenorphine throughout the month — eliminating the burden of daily dosing and ensuring reliable, continuous coverage.

About Sublocade

Suboxone vs. Methadone: What's the Difference?

Both Suboxone (buprenorphine/naloxone) and methadone are FDA-approved medications for opioid use disorder, but they work and are dispensed differently. Suboxone is a partial opioid agonist with a built-in ceiling effect that lowers overdose risk, and it can be prescribed by a physician for you to take at home. Methadone is a full opioid agonist that must be dispensed daily at a federally regulated clinic.

Feature Suboxone Methadone
Medication type Partial opioid agonist Full opioid agonist
Where you get it Prescribed by a physician; taken at home Daily visit to a regulated clinic
Overdose risk Lower (ceiling effect) Higher, especially early in treatment
Convenience & privacy High; telehealth possible Lower; daily in-person dosing
Best suited for Most patients; flexible outpatient care Severe or long-standing dependence

Which is better? For most patients, Suboxone is the preferred first choice because of its lower overdose risk and the convenience of physician-prescribed, at-home treatment without daily clinic visits. Methadone remains an important option for people with severe or long-standing opioid dependence who need the structure of a daily-dosing program — the right choice depends on your history, which Dr. Jafar will help determine.

Yes. You do not need to be fully detoxed before starting treatment. Starting too early can trigger precipitated withdrawal, which feels much worse than regular withdrawal. At your first appointment, Dr. Jafar will assess your withdrawal level using a clinical scale and guide you through the safest timing for your first dose. Many patients begin the same day as their intake visit.
